Lived citizenship: exploring and theorizing spatial and affective dimensions of lived citizenship through the prism of childhood

Citizenship constitutes a ‘momentum concept’, that is “a concept which continuously unfolds towards realizing of more and more of its egalitarian and anti-hierarchical potential” (Lister 20027:42). The recently unfolding concept of lived citizenship approaches citizenship as shaped through contextual everyday practices and experiences, that is as spatial and with acknowledgement of affective dynamics. This conceptualization offers a basis for critical analyses of how care as well as social and pedagogical work contributes to the position and positioning of various groups, including those that doesn’t hold a formal citizenship status, as for example refugees and immigrants, and for young people under legal age as well as other people under guardianship.

After a presentation of the concept of lived citizenship and the theoretical framework for analysis of the spatial and affective dynamics, Warming will present examples of such analyses from various projects about children and young people in different situations, e.g., young people in out of home care, children with separated parents, children and young people with disabilities, and children in times of climate crisis. She will make the argument that analyses of children and young people’s lived citizenship might provide insights into more general lived citizenship dynamics.

Hanne Warming is Professor of Sociology and Childhood, and Head of the Research Group Social dynamics and change at Roskilde University. She is a well-known and reputed sociologist, who has published with great impact in the fields of childhood studies and social work research, as well as on policy and practice. Her research fields of expertise include childhood and youth, social work, lived citizenship, social interaction, methodology and ethics in researching childhood research.
